The history of the Holmegaard glass factory began in 1825. Count Christian Danneskiold-Samsøe asked the King of Denmark for permission to establish a glass factory at Holmegaard Mose. However, the Earl died in 1823 without receiving an answer to his request. Shortly after his death, he received permission from the king to establish a glassworks. His widow, Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe, therefore decided to continue the project.
The factory would be in the peat bog. This meant that sufficient fuel was available to produce the high temperatures for the glass furnace. The first production at the Holmegaard glass factory started in 1825. Initially, the factory only produced green bottles. However, Henriette also wanted to produce clear glass cups. Zo waren Boheemse glasblazers in staat om deze te vervaardigen. Thus, Bohemian glassblowers were able to manufacture these. In a period of 185 years they have grown into a large modern group. In the 20th century, artists emerged and designed Holmegaard’s glass products. This was the beginning of a long and proud tradition. Even to this day, some of Denmark’s best artists are associated with Holmegaard’s glass production.
