Jørgen Gammelgaard
Jørgen Gammelgaard (1938-1991) was a leading Danish designer. He is known for his influence on furniture and lamp design. Gammelgaard contributed to development projects for UNESCO and the Technological Institute. His designs, often crafted from natural materials and stainless steel, exuded simplicity and refinement. Gammelgaard’s legacy includes an extensive collection of furniture and lamps.
A highlight in Jørgen Gammelgaard’s career was the launch of the Tip Top Pendent in 1971 by Design Forum. The Tip Top lamps with multiple shades originated from a commission for UNESCO in Samoa, where Gammelgaard served as a consultant for designing furniture for schools. Since 1978, the lamps have been produced by Pandul.
The story behind the Tip Top lamps is inspiring. During his stay in Samoa, Jørgen Gammelgaard lived with only one light source in his hut: a blinding neon tube on the floor. To reduce the glare, he used plastic covers from UN food rations that he cut out and joined together as sunshades on the neon tube.
Back in Denmark, Gammelgaard translated his creativity into the design of the Tip Top lamp with multiple shades, retaining his innovative approach to reducing glare.
Jørgen Gammelgaard’s legacy lives on in the timeless elegance of his designs, including the Tip Top lamps. These functional lighting pieces also tell a story of creativity and ingenuity in design.
The metal components of the Tip Top pendant lamps are durable and long-lasting. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for the coating on older Tip Top lamps, which is often thinly applied and challenging to find in good condition. Therefore, we have decided to have virtually all Tip Top lamps we come across powder-coated again. This sustainable choice restores the lamps to a like-new condition.
