Design Louis Poulsen PH 5-4½ Hanging lamp Charlottenborg

This lamp is part of the PH lamp series. The trumpet-shaped top screen ensures that three screens below are beautifully illuminated. The other three screens mainly direct the light downwards. It contains a base reflector and a blue dimming ring, which prevent glare from all angles. The screens are lacquered in matt white, which ensures extremely pleasant lighting.

In 1931 Louis Poulsen introduced the four screen system. This luminaire could be mounted high and thus formed an alternative to the then usual chandeliers. With the four-shade lamp from PH, a greater horizontal distribution of the light could be achieved. This improved the illumination of walls and shelves compared to standard three-shade lamps. However, in the 1940s, Louis Poulsen removed the lamp from the range. The lamp was redesigned in 1979 by two Danish architects – Sophus Frandsen and Ebbe Christensen, the PH 6½-6. She designed the lamps for the Art hall Charlottenborg in Copenhagen. To counteract the glare, the two architects decided to add a small blue screen to the design. In addition, in 1984 a smaller version, the 5/4½, was designed for the Concertgebouw in Aarhus.

Louis Poulsen

Louis Poulsen’s goal is not just to design lamps. By shaping light from a lamp, Louis Poulsen wants to create an atmosphere in which people feel good, both inside and outside. The shape of the light creates space and the products should live harmoniously in the space they define – indirect, soft and inviting.
