About Holmegaard

The history of Holmegaard Glassworks began in 1825, when Count Christian Danneskiold-Samsøe asked the King of Denmark for permission to establish a glassworks in Holmegaard Mose. However, the Earl died in 1823 without receiving an answer to his request. His widow, Countess Henriette Danneskiold-Samsøe, decided to continue the project when, shortly after her husband’s death, she received permission from the king to establish a glassworks.

The factory would be located in the peat bog because there was enough fuel there to produce the high temperatures for the glass furnace. The first production at the Holmegaard glass factory started in 1825. In the beginning, the factory only produced green bottles, but Henriette also wanted to produce clear glass cups, and the Bohemian glassblowers were able to manufacture them. The history of Holmegaard glassworks is the story of a few small glassworks in a peat bog, which grew into a large modern group over a period of 185 years. In the 20th century, artists emerged and designed and shaped Holmegaard’s glass products. This was the beginning of a long and proud tradition and as a result even today some of the best artists in Denmark are associated with Holmegaard’s glass production.
